Author Visits
Presentations
I am available to present to students in grades third through sixth about how to be a storyteller. I’ll discuss where stories come from, what kinds of stories can be told, and the many, many ways that anyone can tell stories. (Spoiler alert: Storytelling isn’t just about writing books!)
Workshops
Character Workshop: Let’s create characters! Let’s give them problems and goals and obstacles. Before you know it, we’ll have a plot! First we’ll create a story together, and then students will come up with their own stories.
Five Senses Workshop: How do writers pull readers in and make them feel like they are inside the story? By adding rich sensory details. In this workshop we’ll explore the five senses using examples that participants can see, hear, touch, smell, and taste. Laura will share passages from contemporary works of children's fiction that invoke the senses and help readers experience the same emotions the characters are feeling. Participants will then practice adding sensory details to their own writing.
